Just watched the pilot of Commander in Chief.
It was okay. Kyle Secor may keep me watching. Geena was fine, I do like the chief of staff.
A couple of major problems:
* The stupid fucking titles! Obviously the audience is too stupid to work out who's who, like they do with all other shows. Especially ridiculous the title for the President (I thought she was going in to see the Pope, stupid me). And the title for the Speaker of the House (after he'd already been mentioned a number of times, by both name and title). I was really waiting for the "Oval Office" title.
* Aaron was wise to avoid (on the whole) mentioning recent political figures. I found the constant references to the present and previous RL administrations distracting, and where does that place this show in time?
* Could Nathan Templeton be a greater caricature? Made Ritchie look three dimensional. Would be a more interesting show if he was more moderate.

Date: 2006-03-02 06:31 am (UTC)On the other hand, I liked the mentions of recent political figures, especially the Hilary jokes.

Date: 2006-03-02 07:59 am (UTC)She was elected to VP, and she was next in the line of succession. Templeton wasn't. It's basically the President's fault and I don't think he had any right to ask her to resign in favour of Templeton.
The Hilary thing was a little amusing, but I felt that they were trying to make themselves more serious by setting themselves in the real world, and that rubbed me the wrong way when they're more of a soap (yes, I'm going to compare it to the WW, because it's impossible not to).

Date: 2006-03-02 07:48 am (UTC)That article you linked to (or was it Christine?) was so right, though. Of course this is going to rate better: you don't have to think to watch this show. You just hate Templeton, admire and/or lust after Mackenzie Allen, and let the minutes slip by...

Date: 2006-03-02 07:57 am (UTC)I can't remember what happens in which episode: has Allen decided on her Chief of Staff yet?

Date: 2006-03-02 08:02 am (UTC)It really is a stupid premise. Although, as many countries have shown us, possibly the only way a woman will end up as President for the first time. ~sigh~

Date: 2006-03-02 08:06 am (UTC)And I did want to yell at the tv when they kept going on about the Islamic world not accepting a woman in charge...Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has had at least one female President. Many "non-Western" countries have had female leaders, some many years ago.

Date: 2006-03-02 01:05 pm (UTC)However, the titles irked me so much, as did the long lingering shots whenever Mackenzie looked at her children - as if only a woman president could love her children like that. I'm reading a book about the children of presidents at the moment - most of the men would have killed for their offspring. Jed Bartlett stepped down from the presidency (oh, yeah. He's not real is he? Damn)
And the Hilary thing irked me - after the first time it felt narky and unneccessary.
West Wing beats it hands down. But CJ/Mackenzie would still be pretty.

Date: 2006-03-02 01:11 pm (UTC)I couldn't believe the titles, they really don't think much of their audience. The flashback annoyed me too, because if I'm not mistaken is was kinda filmed in almost sepia tones, plus they had the "two years previously". Just in case you couldn't figure it out. Ummm...interesting observation about the lingering looks.

Yeah, that's it.
It's sunk very quickly in the ratings in the US.

Date: 2006-03-02 05:42 pm (UTC)Nathan is great. He gets so much better as the show goes on. Of course, I am one to route for the "evil" charrie.
