odds and ends

Was watching the story on the DNC on the late news last night and mum said, "The two Johns. Are they anything like the two Ronnies?"
*not sure how many of the USers know the Two Ronnies*
***
As soon as you turn on the radio/stereo/tv, CJ starts whistling and chattering away.
And they love corn on the cob.
***
Where the fuck do all these fanfic authors (I shudder to use that expression in relation to them) get the idea that Jed desperately wanted/wants a son?
And as for the trainwreck from that idiot that I've had run-ins with...her characters are unrecognisable, the storyline is so far off the rails...and yet she has others praising her and wanting more?
It eludes me.

Date: 2004-07-29 11:09 pm (UTC)Thankgod she's not on LJ.

Date: 2004-07-29 11:22 pm (UTC)But that story of hers is horrific. And yet she has the hide to flame people over one wrongly spelt word or their opinion.
I don't recall one instance of the show where there's even been a hint that Jed desperately wanted a son.

Date: 2004-07-29 11:33 pm (UTC)lock it if you want, but your not the only one that has had a run in with her.

Date: 2004-07-29 11:44 pm (UTC)And it's a bit of a relief I'm not the only one. Does she go around purposely trying to annoy people?
I'm calmer about her now...I think. Was to the point just seeing her name sparked panic attacks.
And yes. But I guess they buy into the society stereotyping that a man has to want a son.
Bleh.

Date: 2004-07-30 12:02 am (UTC)I can't believe that someone with such poor writing skills can have the gall to start up a fanfiction list and then discourage other activities unrelated to writing.
(no subject)
Date: 2004-07-30 12:12 am (UTC)I only lurk on that group and been close to bailing several times (I left the CJ/Simon list because of her).
And most of the fanfic lists encourage screencaps/other news etc.

Date: 2004-07-30 12:37 am (UTC)I've been thinking for some time now that I should unsubscribe from many of my lists. As someone who doesn't write very much there doesn't seem to be a place for me on fanfic lists and much of the fiction that is posted isn't worth the read. I'm afraid, yahoo has become the place for the novice to post.
I think it is active discussion, the regular posting of items of interest such as photos and news that keep a yahoo group going strong. Just look at the CJ/Toby group.

Date: 2004-07-30 12:47 am (UTC)I never particularly liked that list, very few good stories/writers after the initial burst of activity.

Date: 2004-07-30 07:07 am (UTC)She's apparently in her early 20s, acts more like a 10 year old.
I'v managed to keep under the radar on the CJ/Ron list, but I do definitely keep thinking I should leave it.

Date: 2004-07-30 07:02 am (UTC)I just don't see him thinking he missed out on anything. And as for these stories which has Abbey deciding he wants a son and asking CJ to have it...that's so not Abbey. If Jed ever complained about not having a son she'd be more likely to tell him to grow up and be thankful for what he has got.
They have no feeling for the characters.

Date: 2004-07-30 07:49 am (UTC)Mallory, maybe, or possibly Zoey.
Now see what you've done?
*drowns misshappen plot bunnies and buries them DEEP*
As for the president, I can almost see justification, in that he's pretty much adopted Josh and Charlie (as well as C.J., which works against the theory). I don't think he'd ever admit it, though, and he certainly wouldn't do anything to make it public knowledge.
I'm reading a piece now where an illegitimate son of Jed's, conceived before his marriage and born without his knowledge, shows up and causes Abbie all sorts of angst along these lines. It doesn't require too much suspension of disbelief.

Date: 2004-07-30 07:59 am (UTC)It stands to reason his staff would be like his kids, and they're mostly male. That's just the reality.
I just loathe the whole 'He must want a son' idea. It's so stereotyped, up there with every woman wants a baby.
ANd the added problem is that the majority of people who try to write these storylines can't write. Only a very precious few would be able to pull them off.
(no subject)
Date: 2004-07-30 08:06 am (UTC)CJ and Charlie are the only ones Jed really treats as his kids.

Date: 2004-07-30 09:42 am (UTC)But in Two Cathedrals, he actually said it: "That was my son! What did I ever do to yours?"
Should I capitalize some of that? Dunno; not religious.

Date: 2004-07-30 09:16 pm (UTC)I guess i see a difference between treating them as his sons/daughters and "wanting" a biological son.

Date: 2004-07-29 11:29 pm (UTC)I guess there's just tasteless gits in every group, and they all provide an apprecitive audience for each other's scrawlings. *shrugs*

Date: 2004-07-29 11:48 pm (UTC)I know how anxious I am before posting anything, a lot of the time i need to be pushed. I don't know how anyone could put out that crap with their name on it and be happy/proud of it.
Yeah, they probably all band together.
Her fans tend to be people I've never heard of, so they probably don't even read or understand the good ones.

Date: 2004-07-30 07:03 am (UTC)I make an effort to read everything, though her stories are lost on me. I read this latest one out thanks to that train-wreck mentality that seems to strike me so early in the morning and it was atrocious. Not even just bad, but atrocious. Still, I can usually get through 'bad' fic and shrug it off as 'just not my tastes' but when the author so clearly thinks they're Shakespeare incarnate I get tempermental.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you're definitely not alone (and as evidenced, there are many more of us who feel repulsion by her fic) and those people who praise her talents...well, look at the source of the praise and you'll understand. ;)

Date: 2004-07-30 07:33 am (UTC)It isn't just that she is an atrocious 'writer'. It's her whole general attitude. In some circles I'm sure she'd be labelled a troll.
Seriously considering leaving that list...I've culled a few she's been heavily involved in, funnily enough they're the ones with virtually only badfic.
(no subject)
Date: 2004-07-30 08:19 am (UTC)Major lists in the fandom I find are my major source of fic (I have a hard time finding fic I've not read on the websites I know of) so to leave would be a huge disappointment to me. But I do understand why you'd want to leave the group. She's certainly made me feel reluctant to ever post again (unfortunately) just because of the mood she's imposed on the list. *sigh*
Well, if you leave you'll be missed, but we certainly couldn't fault you for escaping.
(no subject)
Date: 2004-07-30 08:27 am (UTC)She doesn't seem to say much on the very major lists thank goodness.
She was close to driving me from the cj/danny list, but I've vowed that no one will make me leave there.
(no subject)
Date: 2004-07-30 08:43 am (UTC)What does she have against people at the CJ/Danny, 'cause that's where she and I butted heads, and I have to say she was very... unpleasant.
Oh well... Try to stay positive-she's the crazy one, not you.
Meanwhile, I have five whole minutes of work to do - I love that I can surf the web and get paid for it. :) Makes the work that much MORE enjoyable.

Date: 2004-07-30 08:58 am (UTC)And I have no idea what her problem is. I just wish she'd take it elsewhere.
And that's a good job! Can I get one??? ;)

Date: 2004-07-30 09:33 am (UTC)Meanwhile, there's another lull with nothing to do. *sigh* So, now I'm off to find fic. Wish me luck.

Date: 2004-07-30 08:38 am (UTC)And she was the one who made you leave??? I feel like going and stamping on her some more.
What did she do? I wish I'd known at the time, I would've had something very strong to say.

Date: 2004-07-30 09:31 am (UTC)As for fic authors who get praised when not really deserving it? I see that constantly, and the people who do the praising haven't read anything good enough to compare against it. That or they're so starved for any fic that they'll praise even the bad writers to have more. ;P

Date: 2004-07-30 09:22 pm (UTC)It just gets so disheartening. ANd I'd give anything to be the person to go and pull their stories apart...but I'm too nice.

Yeah, I know, me too.

Date: 2004-07-30 09:50 am (UTC)The only possible canon source for Jed wanting a son is that ridiculous tell-all book that some WH reporter wrote - which brought about that hilarious scene in which CJ read a quote about Jed's underwear and we see them exchange those priceless expressions!
*sighs* Is there more garbage on the list today? Now I'm dreading going there... As for the praise she gets, my guesses are 1) she writes fluff and that's what people like and/or 2) a bunch of them signed onto the list because they were ALREADY her friends and that's why they give feedback to no one but her.
Just my personal opinion...
(no subject)
Date: 2004-07-30 08:24 pm (UTC)I notice those writers who get a lot a feed back on the lists tend to be the ones who are able to strike a happy balance between writing the non-serious, fluff and something that can be considered well constructed because they appeal to writers at several levels.
Just my theory!

Date: 2004-07-30 09:20 pm (UTC)Hilarious, one short, one big.
Probably gets praise because it requires no thought processing...yes, I'm bitter ;)

Date: 2004-07-30 09:29 pm (UTC)It's terrible, and for someone who jumps on other people's spelling mistakes, I've noticed at least a couple in hers. And the characterisation makes no sense apart from being a crappy storyline.
Totally eludes.
And such a beuatiful icon!
