krazykitkat: (bite me (10 things I hate about you))

I've had pretty good relations with various US online companies. Until now.

I made a big order of dvds with Deepdiscount during their recent 20% off sale. The first shipment (the majority of the order) was sent to Australia 9 July, and was received 14th July (sent by international express as the order was over a certain amount).

The second shipment was sent 10 July, via normal mail. Took 3 weeks. And it only contained 4 of the 9 items it was supposed to. There was no room for anything else to fit in the box, so the other 5 items didn't go missing during transit.

I emailed asking whether maybe it had been sent in two boxes. They replied saying they'd process a reshipment for those items. Obviously someone majorly stuffed up, though I don't know how you pack only 4 out of 9 items (and two of the dvd boxes were slightly damaged due to the way they'd been shoved in).

Okay.

A couple of days later I receive an invoice saying that 2 of the 5 items were reshipped...and my credit card had been charged. I'd already paid for them at the time of the 10 July shipment. Emailed them again, asking for a refund if I'd been charged for them.

Checked my bank account today, there was a visa reversal as well as a visa debit. Though the amounts were strange, and I found that the debit also included postage. And the reversal was greater than the debit. I called my credit union, got the US dollar amounts, figured out the reversal is most likely for two other items as well. Thought maybe they were already in the system, so they needed to refund me for those, even though the debit hadn't been cleared yet.

Decided that I'd keep very close account, in case I was out money because of exchange rates.

Just got an email back from them in response to my query:

We do apologize for any confusion. When we reship items we will credit the credit card for the amount of the items and then when the items are shipped the credit card is charged the same exact amount. Therefore, the transaction will cancel each other out and you are still only being charged the amount on the original order.

EXCUSE ME!!!!! But wtf? Why?

Because of international exchange rates, and the fact that buying and selling rates are different, I'm estimating that they're going to charge me several dollars more than they 'credited' me for.

I'll need to wait until I get the other amounts I'm charged, but I'm going to write them a very pissed off email. They should have some bloody idea of how international exchange rates work. And what's the point of bloody crediting and then charging? What a waste of time and effort.

But as I'm not from the US, they'll probably just ignore me.
