In what might prove to be a telling omen for a leader who has struggled for recognition, the electoral officer had to ask for the spelling of Mr Debnam's surname when his wife Deborah registered her vote.

My mother's immediate response:if only they'd taken the little cards [sent out by the electoral office] with them.

Voted in the new hall down the primary school. Wish they'd had it when I went there so many moons ago.
