I'm not sure why I just sent this to the SMH letters as it will never be published.
Memo to Danna Vale et. al: stop using the Medicare figures as the basis for your estimate of the number of abortions carried out in Australia each year. In 2003-04 there were approximately 73000 Medicare-funded terminations (much lower than the 100000 that politicians and anti choice groups quote). This figure only takes account of certain procedures, not the reason they were carried out. These procedures are also used in cases of partial or full miscarriage, or if the foetus has died in utero.
