DEPRESSION has claimed its latest prominent political victim with the sudden resignation of the popular West Australian Premier, Geoff Gallop, less than a year after he swept back to power in state elections.

Most have praised his courage in admitting he suffered from the disease and being prepared to take such a drastic step to counter its effects.
The chairman of the national depression initiative beyondblue, Jeff Kennett, said it may be seen as Dr Gallop's greatest public service.
The former Victorian premier praised the West Australian leader for publicly declaring that he suffered from depression and for resigning from his job so he could get treatment.
"The way in which he has resigned and in publicly declaring the reason for his illness, may yet be seen to be his greatest act of public service," he said.
