It's a lot cooler, low-mid 20s (low-mid 70Fs). The southerly hit our place about 9.40pm, quite gusty. I don't know whether it's calmed down any, but it forced the bush firies up the Central Coast to abandon containment efforts and just protect property as the firefront changed direction.
This was Umina at 8.30pm before the southerly (SMH):

The temperature at Observatory Hill (Sydney's official weather station) hit 44.2C (111F) at 4.24pm, making it the hottest day since January 14, 1939, which reached 45.3C (nearly 114F). That day in 1939 was one of 6 in a row which topped 40C (104F), and there were terrible bushfires in NSW and Victoria (Black Friday) which killed nearly 80.
The temperature at Sydney Airport was a record at 45.1C. It could've been hotter back in 1939, but the Bureau didn't take readings there at that time.
Supposed to be only mid 20s today. Hopefully it will give the bushfiries a chance to get the fires under control.
