I've been playing around a bit, different font colours, installed Photoshop (how the hell do you add borders? It's so easy in Paint Shop Pro, 'Add borders').

Thoughts? The base and border were done in PSP, the font in Photoshop. Might be better if I did it all in Photoshop, but need to figure out how to do the border.

In Photoshop, you create a new image which is the width of your userpic and 1 pixel high. Then fill it in with the color you want. Cut and paste it four tims into the picture you want borders for. Move two to the top and bottom of the image, then rotate the other two layers by 90 degrees so that they're 'upright'. Move those to the sides. Then merge the four layers together so that you have a border. If you don't like the color, you can simply color in the border with the bucket tool.

Thank you, Hon.
PSP is soooo much easier. Wonder why Photoshop doesn't have a similar thing.

A simple border like that in Photoshop --

In your Layers menu, down at the bottom left, there will be an "f" in a circle. Click it, then select "stroke". Set your color, then adjust it to 1px, set inside. Voila!

I think its always a good idea to put the border on a new layer by either creating a new layer or by duplicating the one your working with. Then go to Select->All. Then Edit->Stroke. Under Location make sure "inside" is selected then just experiment with the other settings. You can add other effects to the border by clicking on the little f in the bottom left corner of the layers palette and then selecting blending options.

Yeah, and since I haven't actually used any of the methods above, I have to share mine too. As usual with Photoshop, there's fourteen different ways to get the same effect. =/

I create the icon 98x98 pixels, then go to Canvas Size, change it to 100x100, and it adds a 1 pixel border in whatever background color you have chosen. For some reason, my style borders always come out fuzzy, so I started doing it with the canvas size, and it looked neater.
