It's 1.30 am, and it's still 30-32C (86-90F) over parts of Sydney! Going to be an awful night and week. May break our heatwave record. Last 2 days have been over 40C (104F) over a lot of Sydney. Another 5 days in highs 30s at least.
About 24 hours before tropical cyclone Yasi hits far north Queensland. They are very very worried, it's huge and intense which isn't a good combination. Looks like it will hit close to or possibly directly on Cairns, regional city of about 125 thousand people. Most likely a category 4, wind gusts around 250 km/h, but there's a possibly of it making category 5. About 30000 people have been told to evacuate because of the storm surge danger. They're evacuating the hospitals, moving about 250 patients via plane further south.
This satellite picture from yesterday shows how massive it is.
