65 now confirmed dead. Hospitals have said 3 critically injured will not survive.

I don't know how many more areas they have to go through, but this is getting towards the Ash Wednesday toll (Vic and SA).

Oh dear lord, I thought California had it bad last year, this is far worse. Sending rain vibes to the antipodes....

They said it could be a couple of weeks before they know the final toll, as they have to go through house by house, car by car, to check for bodies. They're bringing in disaster identification experts from around the country. At least 700 houses have been lost and several towns wiped out.

Apparently they fear the final death toll may approach 100.

We've been in drought for more than a few years now. Victoria has it particularly bad, so combine the dry with the atrocious weather conditions they had yesterday, gale force winds, 116F and more temperatures...it was their worst fire conditions on record and add in the human bastards lighting fires...

Yeah :( Victoria needs a heap of rain, but that's not looking likely.

We're so far away from it, but been getting teary. We live with the danger every summer, and when something so huge and horrific happens, it brings home how dangerous living near the bush can be.

And you just hope that the smoke and radiant heat got them first. Because the other is just unthinkable.
