Mr Howard fired back at critics over the controversial military tribunal that tried Hicks, saying: "Whatever may be the rhetorical responses of some and particularly the government's critics, the facts speak for themselves."

"He pleaded guilty to knowingly assisting a terrorist organisation - namely al-Qaeda.

"He's not a hero in my eyes and he ought not to be a hero in the eyes of any people in the Australian community.

He just does not, or doesn't want to, get it! (Though I guess anything else would be an admission of fault and guilt on the government's part) We don't think he's a hero, his father doesn't think he's a hero. The system sucks, that's the point, and is about politics, not justice and the law. One of the admissions was for staking out the American embassy which wasn't even in use, how is staking out an empty building a valid accusation?

Even the Defence Secretary has said:

"My own view is … that no matter how transparent, no matter how open the trials, if they took place at Guantanamo, in the international community they would lack credibility."

Howard's and his government's response is the same sort of simplistic reasoning as the "you're with us or against us".
