Debnam is taking credit for the first swing away from Labor since 1988? Not exactly something to crow about. Especially when you consider the mess that Labor has been in (and they did deserve a kick in the bum) and the disaster upon disaster leading up to the election, yet it looks like the only Labor losses have gone to the Nationals and an Independent. The two Liberal gains were from former blue ribbon Liberal seats that had gone independent.

I just hope this might result in a decrease in power of the far right wing of the NSW Libs. On ABC they were talking to a political consultant who had worked for I think Greiner, and he mentioned several times certain people in the Senate, obviously referring to the far right members. He was essentially blaming them for the loss.

We went from the 4th most marginal Lib seat to very safe. The rot set in with the by-election after Nick Greiner (former Premier) resigned in disgrace many moons ago. The local idiot Independent nearly won because Labor didn't run anybody (mum said that was a scary election - she thinks she ended up voting Liberal because she could not in good conscience vote for the idiot) - and the village idiot now runs for everything and drives us nuts. They've had trouble building the margin since, we also had another by-election Feb 2002 when our current member got in. Looks like the margin's just gone back up to where it was about 15-20 years ago (and am wondering how much being on the main train line was an issue). I didn't vote for her, but Judy Hopwood is a decent local member, and is more to the centre/left in the Liberal party. She crossed the floor with the former leader Brogden to vote with Labor on keeping the heroin injecting rooms open (she's a former nurse).

eta: According to the SMH, our village idiot spent 3 hours in a gaol cell this morning after being picked up for driving while disqualified.
