Our thermometer is currently reading 43C (109F). Because of its position it does tend to read a little high, but it's still bloody hot.
The past few days has seen a monsoon low move across the Northern Territory, and also affect South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and NSW. Within the meteorological community it's referred to as a landphoon. Very similar structure to a tropical cyclone, spiralling rain bands, and even the indication of an eye at times. It's dumping huge amounts of rain. There's flooding in areas of all the states mentioned.
Bedourie Police station in Queensland (in the southwest corner of the state near the SA and NT borders) in the 24 hours to 9am this morning recorded 169mm (6.6 inches). Highest daily total recorded with records going back to 1932. Last year they only recorded 68mm (2.7 inches) for the entire year.
A station owner in the Flinders Ranges (SA) said it's the best rain he's seen in 16 years. Once the flooding subsides he'll be able to increase his livestock and he said the river gums are going to really love it. It's the type of country that relies on occasional flooding like this. The wildflowers throughout central Australia are going to be amazing within a month or so.
And the rain is helping with the bushfires in Victoria.
