I just don't get New Years. It's just another night and it's not as though something miraculous is going to occur because we start a new year. Everything will be the same tomorrow.

And, yes, I'm a killjoy, but personally I think the amount spent on fireworks is ridiculous. It's essentially just burning money.

Careful. You sound like one of those people who says the same thing about arts grants. While you and I could probably make a good argument for art, we're really just talking about a matter of taste. And frankly, I don't think taste should determine what gets money and what doesn't. A good party has an economic value - a 'happening' city is an economic draw - both in tourism and investment dollars. Why the fuck do you think they do it? Out of the goodness of their hearts? Perth City Council is always trying to get people excited about the city. It never really happens except in the case of the Skyworks and hey - it's not my thing, but who am I to judge other people who like it?

I may be misremembering, but fireworks on Sydney Harbour used to be a thing for special occasions, whereas now it's every year. And every year they're spending even more money trying to top themselves.

I'm quite aware mine is an unpopular opinion, and obviously it's not going to sway the organisers or anyone else. Personally I just feel it's a lot of money that goes up in smoke. I'm not judging those who like it, hell, I like a good fireworks display.
