The popping sounds and smell last night were definitely from the dvd player. Dad pulled it apart and we found one of the capacitors in the power supply had literally popped its top. Another one was close to it.

Dad's going to replace them (with maybe bigger capacitors - he said they were working too close to their limits and there wouldn't be such problems with electrical appliances if they put in bigger capacitors (I reckon it's a conspiracy to make sure you have to replace them more often) - it may be what happened to my previous dvd player too) and it might still be useable.

My daddy is a clever daddy :)

My computer did the same a few nights ago when it was really hot. First, the fans started making an unusual vibratory noise and then all of a sudden a loud"POP" came from the case. All seems to be well, though.

That's a relief. Maybe the fans caught on something.

My daddy wouldn't know a DVD player if it fell on his head.

I take my hat off to your Daddy!

Heh. Dad is a bit of an electronics whiz, often gets handed neighbours/friends vcrs etc to try and fix. Through watching him I learned to pull apart vcrs to clean heads and I can usually remove caught tapes and work out some mechanical problems.
