Dad just saw the Vegemite story on the tv news update.

I don't see why it's a problem if it's for personal use...maybe we need to hide it in toothpaste tubes... And you can get Vegemite in a tube, though it's a wide tube...kinda of like a sunscreen shaped tube...just relabel it.

Howard needs to call Bush right now and demand Vegemite is let in otherwise we're pulling out of Iraq and the Anzus treaty.

It's not a ban, it's some idiot who didn't take the Liquid Terror seriously enough. Several of the ML commenters tried to find published evidence of a government ban and nothing turned up on the .gov webites, so... there you have it, folks. Kat, dear, your newspapers seem to suck about as much as ours do in terms of fact-checking.

I was a little suspect about the border thing, thought it was probably a misunderstanding.

But the ban on importing for commercial sale seems real. They talked to some shops in the US that used to import it and they were first cut down to only importing the very small jars and now they can't import any.

ANd from another article:

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

The US was "a minor market'' for Vegemite, she said.

And I did a search and yes, Joanna Scott is a spokesperson for Kraft.
