From an article at SMH talking about Katie Holmes and "silent birth":
Sydney Scientologist Vicki Dunstan said she chose a silent birth, managing to endure 16 hours of labour with hardly a peep.
"I had my daughter, who's over 18 now, in a silent birth in Paddington Hospital's natural birth unit," she said.
"It wasn't like nobody could talk - there's no orders about it - my friend had her baby just before me and she was howling through her birth.
"Common sense is allowed - I might have moaned and made a few noises during contractions, but you just keep it to a minimum.
"I did say some things but would not talk during contractions or during moments of pain and you try to prevent excessive talking."
The silent birth was about making sure her daughter was as "healthy and happy as possible", Ms Dunstan said.
"It actually wasn't that difficult, because you know what effects it could have," she said.
"I've had friends who didn't have silent births and their children are heavy asthmatics, where my daughter has always been a healthy child.
"But it's absolutely your choice - you're not compelled and taking medication is also a personal choice, we have nothing against medical drugs."
Having a silent birth prevents asthma??? Scientologists have so many screws loose it's amazing their heads are still attached to their bodies.

You can tell the scientologists when you pass them in the street....they make a strange metal rattling noise.

Date: 2006-03-29 02:50 pm (UTC)That's just ... one of the most utterly ridiculous things I've ever heard. I mean, where the *hell* do they get this stuff from?!
I think my mum had such a good epidural that she wouldn't have been exactly screaming the house down; she claims she almost fell asleep at one point, but I'm asthmatic and lots of other things. WTF?

Date: 2006-03-29 02:59 pm (UTC)And it's not like there isn't enough trauma in childhood, let's see, oh SCHOOL, and the world we live in, which would explain why people aren't entirely perfectly happy, well-adjusted human beings.
The fact that intelligent women would buy into this blows my mind.

Date: 2006-03-29 04:55 pm (UTC)a) i've never given birth, nor do i plan to, but i find it hard to believe that one should stay silent while pushing something roughly the size of a football out of her body.
b) i don't get the connection between asthma and silent birthing. i mean... the baby's just on it's way out... *wrinkles nose* i don't understand what scientology's all about, but i'm having issues with this birthing business.

Date: 2006-03-29 09:30 pm (UTC)That's because there isn't one. Asthma is either from environmental stresses or genetic. Either way, screeching during labor don't make one bit of difference. And I'm watching Firefly so much the speech patterns are starting to catch. Ack!

Date: 2006-03-30 02:07 pm (UTC)I've only come to know a bit about scientology in the last little while (because I wanted to know just how crazy they are), and I just get more and more incredulous that people actually buy into the crap.
Basically: Scientologists believe that most human problems can be traced to lingering spirits of an extraterrestrial people massacred by their ruler, Xenu, over 75 million years ago. These spirits attach themselves by "clusters" to individuals in the contemporary world, causing spiritual harm and negatively influencing the lives of their hosts.

Date: 2006-03-29 05:41 pm (UTC)Advise from one who has given birth four times -
Scream as loud as you can as soon as you get to the hospital -
"DRUGS! I WANT DRUGS NOW!"
Then use this as an opportunity to scream at your husband for hours on end as to 1) why this is all his fault, and b) every fault he has, thus making the time go faster and entertaining the medical staff.

There are so many flaws in the logic of this that I don't even know where to begin.
Run Katie, Run. Right. Now.
Ha!
