From an article at SMH talking about Katie Holmes and "silent birth":

Sydney Scientologist Vicki Dunstan said she chose a silent birth, managing to endure 16 hours of labour with hardly a peep.

"I had my daughter, who's over 18 now, in a silent birth in Paddington Hospital's natural birth unit," she said.

"It wasn't like nobody could talk - there's no orders about it - my friend had her baby just before me and she was howling through her birth.

"Common sense is allowed - I might have moaned and made a few noises during contractions, but you just keep it to a minimum.

"I did say some things but would not talk during contractions or during moments of pain and you try to prevent excessive talking."

The silent birth was about making sure her daughter was as "healthy and happy as possible", Ms Dunstan said.

"It actually wasn't that difficult, because you know what effects it could have," she said.

"I've had friends who didn't have silent births and their children are heavy asthmatics, where my daughter has always been a healthy child.

"But it's absolutely your choice - you're not compelled and taking medication is also a personal choice, we have nothing against medical drugs."

Having a silent birth prevents asthma??? Scientologists have so many screws loose it's amazing their heads are still attached to their bodies.

I've just sprayed tea everywhere! Not just from the article but also from your userpic!

It would be laughable if they weren't so seriously adamant about it all! I'll be sure to tell my mother it's her fault for not having a silent birth! (And the 4 siblings who had identical births and don't have it????!!!)

You can tell the scientologists when you pass them in the street....they make a strange metal rattling noise.

Isn't it the best userpic :) Using her again.

They're as bad as the Raelians. Their common sense and rationality have been erased.

Uhoh. My mother didn't have a silent birth with me...and I'm not asthmatic.

Quick! Somebody blame a Thetan!

....?

That's just ... one of the most utterly ridiculous things I've ever heard. I mean, where the *hell* do they get this stuff from?!

I think my mum had such a good epidural that she wouldn't have been exactly screaming the house down; she claims she almost fell asleep at one point, but I'm asthmatic and lots of other things. WTF?

They're idiots with no common sense or ability to rationalise. When are they going to work out that the rest of the world think they're nuts for many good reasons.

Umm, yeah. Ooookay. This whole mother screaming during childbirth causes trauma is such a crock, it's so screwy even Freud would not have dreamed it (unless he did).

And it's not like there isn't enough trauma in childhood, let's see, oh SCHOOL, and the world we live in, which would explain why people aren't entirely perfectly happy, well-adjusted human beings.

The fact that intelligent women would buy into this blows my mind.

or like was your mum silent the whole time she carried you? cause maybe that affects it too? Hey, maybe the mother should be silent from conception to the 18th birthday? then kids could be "really healthy and happy".

I think they must be brainwashed, because I don't understand how else supposedly "normal" people could buy into this crap.

a) i've never given birth, nor do i plan to, but i find it hard to believe that one should stay silent while pushing something roughly the size of a football out of her body.

b) i don't get the connection between asthma and silent birthing. i mean... the baby's just on it's way out... *wrinkles nose* i don't understand what scientology's all about, but i'm having issues with this birthing business.

i don't get the connection between asthma and silent birthing.

That's because there isn't one. Asthma is either from environmental stresses or genetic. Either way, screeching during labor don't make one bit of difference. And I'm watching Firefly so much the speech patterns are starting to catch. Ack!

Scientologists are crazy and brainwashed.

I've only come to know a bit about scientology in the last little while (because I wanted to know just how crazy they are), and I just get more and more incredulous that people actually buy into the crap.

Basically: Scientologists believe that most human problems can be traced to lingering spirits of an extraterrestrial people massacred by their ruler, Xenu, over 75 million years ago. These spirits attach themselves by "clusters" to individuals in the contemporary world, causing spiritual harm and negatively influencing the lives of their hosts.

Silent birth? Ha.

Advise from one who has given birth four times -
Scream as loud as you can as soon as you get to the hospital -

"DRUGS! I WANT DRUGS NOW!"

Then use this as an opportunity to scream at your husband for hours on end as to 1) why this is all his fault, and b) every fault he has, thus making the time go faster and entertaining the medical staff.

There are so many flaws in the logic of this that I don't even know where to begin.

I know some cultures believe in minimal sound during birthing but that has nothing to do with having a "healthy" baby. If having a silent birth was truly the solution to all health problems I am sure that more people would have one. I agree that they must be not right to believe in that bollocks.
