Spamming a bit today...here's some maps (thanks to erilyn) with Australia overlaying the US and Europe, to give you an idea of the distances. Larry crossed between Cairns and Townsville.
I keep trying to explain distance to the English here, but it's difficult, they think taking three hours to go from Manchester to Newcastle is a huge journey.

Especially since I was brought up in a country town where hours long weekly jouneys were necessary for grocery shopping.
we had a similar discussion while sailing for the Ocean Drilling Program: when someone asks an American how far is it to get between point A and point B, an American is most likely to tell you the distance in terms of time to get from point A and point B, whereas a European was more likely to give you an actual distance. That of course was a small sampling on a boat of 40 scientists.
Wow...thanks for that; my geography really sucks and I have no sense of perspective on these things. I obviously need to get myself a Peters Projection.....
