Spamming a bit today...here's some maps (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] erilyn) with Australia overlaying the US and Europe, to give you an idea of the distances. Larry crossed between Cairns and Townsville.

I keep trying to explain distance to the English here, but it's difficult, they think taking three hours to go from Manchester to Newcastle is a huge journey.

Ha. Ha.

Especially since I was brought up in a country town where hours long weekly jouneys were necessary for grocery shopping.

The difference between Europea and America: Europeans think 100 years is a long way, Americans think 100 years is a long time. 0=)

So, looking at the NA map, it started in Lake Huron and ended up in some cold, empty land between (and slightly north of) Sudbury and Thunder Bay.

Looking at those maps, it becomes surprising that Australia isn't as big as the States... until one remembers the Alaska.

When I said started I'd read your 'between' as 'from here to there'.

we had a similar discussion while sailing for the Ocean Drilling Program: when someone asks an American how far is it to get between point A and point B, an American is most likely to tell you the distance in terms of time to get from point A and point B, whereas a European was more likely to give you an actual distance. That of course was a small sampling on a boat of 40 scientists.

it's all relative!

Wow...thanks for that; my geography really sucks and I have no sense of perspective on these things. I obviously need to get myself a Peters Projection.....
