I saw Serenity today with my sister and brother (his second viewing).

I loved it and will probably see it again with my sister.

*double sniff*

I knew about both deaths, but didn't know how (and as my sister said, it's Joss, someone has to die). And Wash's shocked me. I put my hand over my mouth and may've squeaked. And there were tears, though more later. Especially with Zoe. I thought the things on the top of the graves were a little bit hokey.

I'm very impressed with Summer Glau. And "I swallowed a bug" was priceless.

And I adored the closing with River and Mal.

Tears and laughter and thrills. What more could you want.

I'm not in the fandom, but I understand there's a lot of carry on and moaning about how it isn't doing well enough. Was it actually ever expected to do fabulously? I couldn't see it as ever being anything more than a smaller film. Apparently while it's in the lower half of the top 10, it's got the highest screen average of any film in Australia.

I think a lot of people hoped it would do extremely well, but it is kinda niche to start with, and a lot of people prolly saw who was behind it and thought, "Oh, that Buffy guy" and didn't bother. Until word of mouth pushes out more and people get that it's really good drama, not just some space western, for now it's us fans of the show that are seeing it. Multiple times. :D

I agree totally with your reading of the situation. I just never saw it being a huge thing.

I actually groaned out loud when I saw the tombstones. They were so tacky. I prefer to block that from my mind.

I think the moaning comes from the fact that if it doesn´t do well, we won´t get the sequels. But it´s not doing that bad, it was number 2 in the box office in the US first week, that´s not bad.

There was eye rolling on my end.

And yeah, I saw it was 2nd, and thought, "that's doing badly?" A lot of big Hollywood movies with known stars don't open that high.

I saw a preview of the movie back in June, and saw it in the theatre when I was in NY, and BOTH times I brought my hands to my mouth and squealed when Wash died. I knew it was coming, I knew the line he was saying when he went... And it still hit me hard.

I'm a wimp, and I loved every character from the show...

I did find Book's death rather anti-climatic though... It didn't hit me like Wash's did.

Agreed on all points. Thought Book's was a bit clichey. Surviving till they get there.

She didn't squeal. She was crying. I might have teased her. ::cough::

It needs to do well to get a sequel, but also, the desperation for it to do well is part of the "Yah, boo, sucks to you, Fox," aspect of the fandom. Because if this was a fairytale, it would be the most popular thing out there and there would be Fox executives chewing their nails in frustration at letting the Big New Franchise slip through their fingers.

I guess I just don't believe in fairytales.
