Started my holidays, 2 weeks off work (and tafe)! Looking forward to resting and recharging (hopefully a little).

My counsellor had been trying to convince me to ask for time off since around March. Health and emotional-wise, I really do need more than the Christmas break. But I was so scared to ask. I've been there 3 years, but being a casual, I feel expendable and like I'm not pulling my weight. I decided on June or July, and when we got Phantom tickets for 16 July, I finally had a firm time frame and took the plunge.

And I fretted for nothing. I just said to B that I needed to take 2 weeks off for health reasons, gave her the dates, and it was set.

And when I get back I'm being given a certain task. It's something I've been working on parts of for a while, but they're automating it more and I'm being given prime responsibility (with the helping hand of B). Plus my current main task of handling the helpline emails. So doesn't look like they'll be kicking me anytime soon.

Last week was a bit busy. This past weekend my brother, Matt, was involved in a medieval festival, so he and Wee Jock (the cockatiel) came up on Wednesday to stay. It was also his birthday, so that night the other brother, s-i-l and Lara came to dinner. Dad said Lara walked in, stopped dead when she saw Jock's cage, looked around the corner to where the budgies are to make sure they were still there, and then looked back to Jock. You could practically see the little wheels turning in her brain.

Work on Friday was trying to get as up to date as I could before my hols. And did some scanner receiving which really did my hands in. Just the slightest knock, particularly on the finger joints or nail bed, is enough to put me through the roof. My hands were killing me when I woke up Saturday.

Lara arrived late Saturday morning, had a short sleep and lunch, and then we went over to the Winterfest Medieval Festival. Was a fun afternoon. There were sword fighting displays in the morning. In the afternoon we saw a bird of prey show, and the jousting, where Matt was the announcer. After the joust, I took Lara over to pat the palomino. She has fed a horse before and seemed to want to pat it, but there was a bit of a crowd and the horse moved its head too close to her head and she got scared and cried a little. She burrowed her head under my chin and kept it there for quite a while. Was the best feeling, being her protector.

Some wonderful stalls, jewellery, crafts etc. I bought a gorgeous glass pendant, and a print and two bookmarks from this wonderful fairy/fantasy artist Selina Fenech. I'm thinking about getting a few more of her prints.

Lara got to share a bedroom with her Uncle Matt on Saturday night. And she didn't sleep much... Didn't disturb him, he was exhausted, plus Lara just lay there very quietly, only crying briefly once. But she was awake from around 1-3.30am at least. And was then up at 8.15 Sunday morning. And then wouldn't sleep during Sunday. So by Sunday evening she was a bit stroppy and naughty.

S-i-l came after work, and fed Lara dinner, mum bathed her. She was put to bed earlier than normal. S-i-l stayed for dinner, and brother Matt and his mate, Kylie, who shared a stall (Matt sold chain maille teddy bears) with him at Winterfest, also came for dinner. Kylie only got out of hospital (pneumonia) Saturday morning, but was determined to be there. Then her car broke down on the way home Saturday evening, so she had to make other arrangements to get up here Sunday, and then Matt was going to take her home after dinner. Was a full house.

Matt, Wee Jock and Kylie left, then mum and dad followed Lara and s-i-l home so mum could help put Lara to bed (s-i-l's hips are acting up). Lara was dead to the world.

And our house finally returned to normal. It's funny, we were 6 for so long, but we've become used to 4, and like when it returns to that state.
