Excerpt from SMH:
The head of the Uniting Church in Australia believes there is no need to reopen the abortion debate, saying current laws allow women the space they need for an appropriate decision.
The president of the church's national assembly, the Reverend Dean Drayton, said respect for the sacredness of human life meant "advocating for the needs of women as well as the unborn child".
Dr Drayton said the church rejected "two extreme positions, that abortion should never be available and that abortion should be regarded as simply another medical procedure".
In a stance that has set it apart from most of its Christian counterparts, the Uniting Church has reiterated its position, saying the situation was too complicated for one unyielding position and that people's circumstances would always be unique.
"We want to say that all human life is sacred, human beings are made in the image of God," Dr Drayton said.
While he said abortion should not be practised indiscriminately, to have one viewpoint which applied to everyone was "not always helpful".
"Most women who have abortions do so only after a great deal of searching and anguish," he said.
While I'm not religious, the Uniting Church was where my parents got married. And I'm very impressed with their stance. People's circumstances are always unique, there's no one size fits all solution.

Date: 2005-02-12 04:21 pm (UTC)My high school religion teacher's husband is a Uniting Church minister and she is active within the politics of the church and policies of the government and used to tell us that the policy was dictated not by the bible but by compassion and that most of the extremest groups have lost their compassion in a bid for power... my Catholic school hates her.

Sigh. Oh to be in another state.
