For the last year in particular, I've been in a love/hate relationship with my country.
But this makes me proud:

Australians have donated almost $20 million to help Asia's tsunami victims, as aid agencies began responding to the enormity of the crisis in Indonesia.

Public donations to 15 fundraising campaigns for the victims of the catastrophe approached the $20 million mark.

That is in addition to the $35 million and other forms of aid the Australian government has committed.

A growing number of Australian humanitarian workers and doctors are being deployed to disaster-struck countries.

The Australian Red Cross has $10.8 million available for distribution since appeals opened on Sunday.

World Vision Australia has now raised $5.5 million and CARE Australia has collected $2.8 million.

And when you consider that the Red Cross's initial target was $8 million internationally.
We put into the Red Cross today.

It's been a day since I looked at the news, but doesn't that mean the Australian government has already committed more money than the US government and the Australian people have given nearly as much as the US government?

Anyway. Whatever.

It's heartbreaking, the effects of those earthquakes.

THe US government had upped it to $45 million the other day, but haven't heard anything since.
Our government is now up to $60 million and the Australian public have donated $41 million to date.

I too hate my government . This is the second coup that we have allowed to occur in the U.S. with barely a sigh.

It's at times like these however that I am reminded that people can be generous. People can be kind. People can look beyond themselves and help their fellows.

The whole world has moved to the right. Australia is still to the left of the US, but it doesn't comfort me that much.

But yes, people can be kind.
