New era dawns for an Australia in Howard's image
Well Margo's really cheered me up :sigh:
Why can't we have strong economic management AND social justice/good environmental polices/an independent Australia/egalitarianism?
Why do they seem to be mutually exclusive in many minds?
And a couple of weird feelings:
1. I'd be much happier if Howard left and Costello took over. At least he's a republican.
2. I would be a little less bothered by Ruddock if he bloody well did anything for the electorate. But he's a terrible local member. At least our present and the immediately past Liberal state members are good local members.
3. One aspect I like about the US system is that the members aren't tied to the apron strings. They still have their cliques, but they are more autonomous in the way they vote on individual issues. I'd like to see that here, more debate within the parties and between the parties and not getting your career destroyed because you want to vote with the other party.
The parties say that's disunity, but I see it as healthy.
