Oct. 6th, 2009 01:18 amWe had a doozy of a storm this afternoon. Lots of lightning and rain, and a ~90 minute black out over pretty much all the upper north suburbs of Sydney.
About 40,000 homes in Sydney's north are without power this evening as storms move through the area.
Energy Australia says suburbs including Hornsby, Wahroongah, Cherrybrook, Beecroft and Berowra have been affected by the blackout.
Kylie Yates from Energy Australia says a lightning strike probably triggered the problem.
"At about quarter to five there was obviously a massive lighting strike so all that power went at once, it's obviously hit some equipment," she said.
"Our crews are out investigating what damage the network has sustained and our other engineers are also working out how we can re-route power from other areas of the network so we can get power restored as quickly as possible."
I tried to call Energy Australia within a couple of minutes but I was on hold and the lightning was a bit close so I hung up. When I tried to call about 5 minutes later, areas like Denistone and Watanobi, Dee Why and Curl Curl were out too. The recorded message had been through over a dozen suburbs, they never got to us, when it got cut off by another message saying that they were so overloaded that they couldn't take any calls. If there were power lines down or another emergency situation you could all another number, but if it wasn't an emergency the operator would cut you off. Tried half an hour later and got the message about the northern areas being out.
We had to have our inaugural meeting of the War on DOCS Council in the semi-dark, which is kinda their attitude to child protection. We need all the prayers and good vibes possible.
