krazykitkat: (weather)
NSW has recorded its hottest early October day since records began in 1859.

Temperatures across the state climbed to 35 degrees Celsius and beyond, with recordings of 36.2 degrees Celsius [97F] at Sydney Airport and 34.8 degrees [95F] in the city.

"It's the hottest day for the first few days of October," said Scott Adams, a duty observer at the Bureau of Meteorology's Sydney Regional Forecast Centre.

"The actual record maximum for October is 38.2 degrees [100F] (for Sydney), on October 13, 2004. But this is a record for early October."

Add in the strong hot dry NW winds (gusts recorded up to 89 km/h at the airport) and the humidity which for a lot of the day was under 10% - I gasped when they said it was 7%. Plus being school holidays, a whole lot of unsupervised little firebugs running around

A number of fires, a few of which have been burning since Monday. The one that caused the most trouble was once again up my neck of the woods, cutting the F3, Pacific Highway and northern railway line for about two hours in peak hour (these are the only ways north out of Sydney without going out west and around). Thousands of people stuck in hot cars along the roads and in Hornsby (where the trains were terminating).

Got a bit of a southerly tonight, wasn't that strong but it's cooled things down. Supposed to warm up again by Saturday.
