Sep. 21st, 2007 12:31 amI don't like mornings at the best of times. Liked this morning even less.
Was woken by these loud noises, jumped straight out of bed, thought something was being fired at the house. Rushing around, found my parents at the front window and discovered the power lines had been hitting together. Sparks and those awful bangs.
We're on a hill, on the top corner of the street. Three houses down from us, the people were having a tree removed by a tree lopping service. They had come out on Saturday and refused to do it because it was too dangerous, but then were doing it today and had told the owners that they were responsible if anything went wrong (would like to know if that was in writing). Part of the tree had fallen on the electricity wires leading to that person's house, which pulled the power pole on the other side of the street, which resulted in tension and then waves, and they banged together producing lots of sparks (I would've liked to see that actually) and the terrible noise.
Next door said they'd lost power, we still seemed to have it, until we checked and found that we'd lost the powerpoints in the back third of the house. Due to the air conditioning, we have three phase power, and one phase had been lost. So I could at least have breakfast. Not sure at what point I looked at the clock, probably a few minutes after I bounded out of bed, found it was 8.20am. My alarm was due to go off a few minutes later.
Called the electricity company, and they put it on the emergency list. Parents headed out to their doctor's appointment about 10 minutes after it happened and then called to say there was a power line down on the ground up around the corner. Very lucky that the kids who may have been heading to school at that time usually don't go down that side of the road, as it landed on the grass in front of the houses. Called the electricity company again to let them know and they said there was a crew on their way. Parents passed them further down the main road.
About an hour later saw a truck going up the road, and then came down our street. I went out and told them what had happened, then went up around the corner to see the downed line. There were about 7 trucks there, and the cherry picker arrived. Talked to another bloke and he said that several fuses had blown and the downed line had burnt through (I wonder why that was the point that the damage occurred, it was about 4-5 power poles away from the impact). A few minutes later they turned the power completely off, and about 40 minutes after that it was all fixed.
I've felt funny all day, never got the chance to actually wake up.
