Jul. 29th, 2007 02:25 pmDr Haneef flew out of Australia for India early on Sunday morning after a terrorism-related charge against him was dropped due to lack of evidence.
Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews has again refused to reinstate Dr Haneef's work visa and said he still had "suspicions" about him.
Mr Andrews said Dr Haneef still failed the character test under which the visa was originally cancelled.
"The basis upon which Dr Haneef's visa was cancelled remains vaild," he told Channel Seven on Sunday morning.
"His lawyers indicated to my department ... that he wanted to get out of Australia as soon as possible. If anything that rather heightens, rather than lessens, my suspicions."
Dr Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo says the Indian national is planning to fight in the courts to have his Australian work visa reinstated.
I probably shouldn't be shocked, but I exploded when I heard Andrews' comments on the radio.
You've been held for 23 days, your visa has been cancelled, so you're going to be held in detention and then likely deported, you have a wife and a baby you haven't seen...who wouldn't want to go home asap?
I don't know why Andrews even bothered with an inquiry into his decision, I knew he wasn't going to change his mind since guilt by association is a hanging offence.
He's trying to reinforce the paranoia of the Chicken Little section of the public who couldn't rationalise or analyse their way out of a paper bag.
I hope that Dr Haneef's lawyers take the government to the cleaners.
