The Government portrayed Hicks's plea as vindication of the military commission process and a defeat for Hicks's vocal lawyers.

What bloody garbage. The Australian Federal government are as much at fault for this bad joke as the US government. They should have followed the lead of the British government and pulled him out.

In addition:

THE military lawyer for David Hicks, Major Michael Mori, has been accused of breaching US military rules by undermining the election prospects of the Prime Minister, John Howard.

In an email to the head of the US military commission process, Judge Susan Crawford, the chief prosecutor, Colonel Morris Davis, claimed Major Mori had hurt relations between the US and "one of our closest allies".

"Major Mori's campaign is having a direct impact on the elected government of one of our closest allies in an election year and while they are supporting us in war," Colonel Davis said in the email, dated March 13.

Citing Mr Howard's poor standing in the polls, Colonel Davis said Major Mori was breaching the Pentagon requirement that service members do not undermine "foreign relations".
