When Janelle Carter's husband Mark died in a tragic accident almost a year ago, her brother Paul Kimlin promised he'd fill the father-figure role for her then unborn son.

Now, less than a year later, Lieutenant Kimlin is also dead, one of the nine victims aboard the Royal Australian Navy helicopter that crashed during a mercy mission in Indonesia at the week-end.

It's been 12 months of unimaginable tragedy for the Carter-Kimlin family.

The one shining light has been the birth of a son, Hugo, to Mrs Carter and her husband after his death on December 10 last year.

Hugo's dad Mark, the 33-year-old Canberra cycling identity, died on April 14 last year in a bizarre accident following a family wedding at Gunnedah, in north western NSW.

Mark Carter got up during the night and accidentally fell, striking his head on concrete suffering fatal injuries.

As it happened, Lt Kimlin spent just 19 days with his tiny nephew before leaving on a rescue mission to tsunami-ravaged Banda Aceh on December 29 last year.

"This time last year we suffered a similar family tragedy where my husband passed away," Mrs Carter told ABC television.

"And soon after Mark died I found out I was pregnant with Hugo and so Paul took on the role of being a surrogate father in Hugo's life with gusto."


The whole helicopter accident is so sad. There is something extra poignant when those trying to help out become victims.
