krazykitkat: (flip [bymegathy27])
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that facts don't matter, but the nonsense about late term abortions is really making me angry.
Here are the facts (from SMH):

Severe foetal health problems or in rare cases, a risk to the mother's life, were the only reasons doctors would perform a late-term abortion in the state's hospitals, obstetricians and neonatalists say.

"The thought that we would be doing these procedures on a whim is just unthinkable," said Andrew Child, the immediate past-president of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists...

Experts were quick to point out the discovery of severe abnormalities in a foetus, such as a serious heart defect or anencephaly - where the foetus does not develop a skull - brings with it immense pain and sadness for parents.

They are faced with the heartbreaking decision of whether to terminate the pregnancy or continue to full term, knowing the child that is born will most likely die, within hours or days, or, in few cases, live to be severely disabled, Dr Child said...

According to the Health Insurance Commission, there were 72,553 Medicare-funded terminations in the first trimester (up to 12 weeks) in 2003-04, and 637 - or less than 1 per cent - in the second trimester, which is 13 to 24 weeks. Both sets of figures included treatment following miscarriages.

The director of obstetrics at the Royal Hospital for Women at Randwick, Rob Buist, said the decision to terminate a pregnancy after 20 weeks was never taken lightly. "Almost invariably, the baby has been recently diagnosed with a condition that would mean they would die either before, during or after their birth," he said.

There are NSW Health guidelines that provide both a legal and clinical framework for hospitals to follow.

"I have never come across a request for a termination at this stage for so-called lifestyle reasons," Dr Buist said.

So they'd rather women died or parents were put through even more absolute hell?
And I'm going to thump the next person that says pro-abortion.
