CJ and Eddie were out for their afternoon fly, and CJ turned the wrong corner and ended up out the rumpus room (where I'm sitting now). He does it every so often and is probably 50/50 whether he can fly back out himself. I checked to see where Eddie was (because she's the one who usually gets into trouble), and then walked out to the rumpus room. I could see CJ flying back and forth and exhausting himself, he was getting lower and lower.
I walked towards him and put out my cupped hands (not sure what I was trying to do - get under him I guess) and all of a sudden I had this little exhausted bird flat on his front, sitting in my hands. I'm not sure whether I was just in the right spot at the right time, or whether he actually saw me as safety and plopped himself down. So light, and I could feel him puffing, and it was just one of those special moments. I walked out of the rumpus room and he'd recovered enough to take off again, back to the cage.
They spent some time wandering around the top of the cage, a little more flying, than Eddie did her usual thing when she's had enough. She climbs down the front of the cage and in the gate (CJ then just needs to be herded towards the front of the cage (he needs to be told that it's time) and he'll fly in the gate). But the gate was down (sometimes she'll try and go back in just after we've got her out) and she did her usual thing of holding onto the gate, not sure where the opening is. And then, for the first time, CJ tried to fly in the gate by himself, but ended up just latched onto it.
Herded them back onto the top of the cage, pegged the gate open, and got CJ on my finger and whistled to him a little, before taking him near the gate. He flew straight in. Eddie was still sitting on top of the cage. And I wish I'd had a video camera. CJ looked up at Eddie and Eddie looked down at CJ. And you could see the gears turning in CJ's head, 'There's something wrong here. Aren't I supposed to be out there and she in here?' After a few looks, Eddie didn't care. But CJ kept looking up at Eddie, and the expression on his little face was so funny. Then herded Eddie down the front and in, and CJ was over his confusion.
