Catalogue delivery around the other area today, tried to kill myself slipping on a driveway (damn pebble-crete on a slope). Managed to stay upright but knocked my ankles together and jarred myself.
Saw Phantom of the Opera this arvo. Loved the majority of it.
Emmy Rossum carried the film. Lovely mature voice, beautiful girl.
And I really liked Raoul. Never really been a fan of the character before, was always more into the Phantom/Christine. But this time I was all for the Raoul/Christine.
Minnie Driver was hilarious. Miranda Richardson is always great. I loved Meg (again a character I didn't think much of on stage), and as a couple of people have said, Meg is so in love with Christine. And I've decided Meg is the Phantom's daughter.
And of course Andre and Firmin were just perfect.
The costumes/scenery were just fabulous, so glorious.
As for the Phantom...I was prepared for disappointment. He wasn't terrible, he was decent, and in some spots I thought even good. But whoever played the Phantom had to be better than decent or even good. I was looking at my watch during Music of the Night. He was miscast.
I don't know whether it was because of the actor, or a deliberate choice in the story telling, he was also a different Phantom than what I'm used to on stage. As mum said, he's pathetic, a stunted child.
And mum and my sister were trying to work out who he looked like (my brother reckons he's another lost Baldwin brother). I came down to a cross between Julian McMahon (back when he had more weight on his face) and Eddie McGuire (only the Aussie will understand).
I found the singing lines converted to talking annoying, wasn't fussed with the b&w 1900s transition scenes (the start and end were fine, but the ones inbetween I thought unneeded and too Moulin Rougey). And I'm with my sister, why did they change he's a funny sort of spectre to expect a large retainer to he's a funny sort of apparition to.... Threw it off. Why take the rhyme out of the semi-sung lines and leave it in the lines they converted to speaking?
And too many accents. Props to Miranda for going with the French. But I just wish everyone could have gone with the same accent (whichever one was chosen).
