I love SBS!
Feb. 1st, 2004 01:12 amWatched The Clitoris: Forbidden Pleasure, a French documentary, on SBS last night.
Was intersting, included the Melbourne doctor who has done the most recent research which found how large a structure it is, I remember Quantum running a story on her a few years ago.
The bit that I found the most interesting was the history of the clitoris in medicine.
It was first studied in 1559 by an Italian anatomist, who said 'such a pretty organ and so useful'. His research was forgotten and about a century later, a Dutch anatomist thought he'd discovered it and was convinced that 'without the pleasure it gave, no woman would ever agree to bear children'.
The clit was studied and described extensively from the 1840s onwards, in 1900 it appeared in Gray's Anatomy, but had vanished by the 1948 edition.
