Police dog fatally stabbed on the job
The New South Wales Government has condemned the stabbing of a police dog as a cowardly and despicable act.
It is the first time in the state's history a police dog has been killed by an offender.
The three-year-old German Shepherd called "Titan" was with his handler when he was stabbed by a man after a siege in Sydney's west.
Police Minister John Watkins says it is a very painful loss for the officers at the dog squad.
"There will be some very distressed officers at the dog squad today with very good reason," he said.
"They've lost a brave and noble ally, they form a very close bond with their handler, it's not like other police dogs and that was certainly shown last night where the dog placed himself between an armed offender and his police handler."
The man involved in the siege is expected to be charged later today.

Titan was actually on the news just last night as part of a promotion of the dog squad patroling schools to reduce vandalism.
Dad knew a number in the dog squad when he was in the police and often talked about how close the dogs and handlers are, and how lovely (and sometimes funny) the dogs are.
