I'm kinda writing again. Not much, but I finished a little thing (just over 300 words). And I was reasonably happy with it...until I typed it up.

There's so much white space on the page. It's all dialogue and short movements that stick out like the proverbial sore thumb, and I just hate that I can't write description or set scenes to save my life.

I love your icon. It's so appropriate!
But honestly, I think it's our own tendencies to be our worst critic...
and to self-edit during the writing process that stifles out natural creative juices.
Does it help if you write with a specific person in mind?
*hugs*

Maybe you just need to take a step back from it as if you're looking at it (the scene or the story or the moment, whatever) from a slight distance. What sort of movements would the characters have while exchanging such dialogue? What are they like as individuals? Are they straightforward? Would they look each other in the eyes? Would they avoid eye contact? Would one of them touch the other in any way (hand on the shoulder, or brush away a piece of lint, or squeeze a hand or an arm, etc.)? What is the scene about? How comfortable are the characters together? How well do they know each other? What is the typical behavior of each character in conversations with others? Does he or she stand separately, hands on hips, or arms crossed, or ...? These are all little things you can add amidst the dialogue wherever you feel it's okay to break up the conversation a bit.

Of course the tough part is actually writing it. And believe me, I feel your pain. *GRIN*

*HUGS*

I'm sure it's wonderful. You are a talented writer, Kat.

*shakes head at you*

It is never as bad as you think. Send it to someone to read, please, sis of mine.

My fic is almost always heavy on dialogue, and I don't get a lot of complaints. You're probably judging it a lot more harshly than others will. ~hug~

if we combined our resources, we would have a full-fledged fic! hah.

of course, i'm not writing ANYTHING right now, which is terrible, because i have both applications and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide to write.
