Phew!
My computer is working again.
Wouldn't go into windows when I turned it on this morning, so I slaved it on dad's computer (thank goodness for having all our hard drives in removable drawers) and ran the error check on the drive...took for bloody ever, but it found a bad sector which just happened to contain c:\windows\user.dat
It supposedly fixed it, so shoved the hard drive back into my computer, it started up, windows did a check thing and replaced the file and now we're up and running again!

But really, I had no idea what to do, but found that windows can run a thing to check for errors, and so I did and it worked!
