krazykitkat: (shiny (Kaylee - Firefly))

A bit late posting this...my sister's words mostly.

My brother, sister and I all arrived at different times for the convention, but all of us missed Jason Palmer's talk in the morning. Jason is an artist who's done a lot of paintings of Firefly, LoTR, Star Wars, Star Trek, Heroes, etc. His work is amazing, although, my sister pointed out that while his drawings of the male characters are almost perfect, the female characters are often just a little off. I bought a Serenity print montage, my sister bought a 1975-2002 Star Wars print done in pencil. Some of his work can be seen here, and it's definitely worth looking at.

I spent a little too much (on top of the autographs). A few things from the Browncoats, an autographed photo of Alan Tudyk (Wash), and a Serenity model. My sister bought Juggling Goslings (they are referred to in Firefly, apparently). They are adorable.

I didn't see Ron Glass, but this is my sister's report: Ron was a very laughy speaker. His talk was interesting. He's just auditioned for a role as a 50 year old Chinese man, so he's not sure how well that will turn out. He wasn't impressed with the serious expression on his face in the picture that they had up on the screen of him and was trying to figure out what he was thinking. He managed to get exactly the same expression later on in the talk when somebody made a smart arse joke and it was very funny. He's a huge Lakers fan, apparently, and he said that the hardest thing about playing Book was the restraint he had to show. There's going to be a comic about Book, "A Shepard's Tale" or some such, that will deal with his past, and he let slip a few spoilers.

Nathan was wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Bit more solid than during Firefly.

In the naked scene on Firefly, inbetween takes seeing as he was effectively only wearing the end of a sock, he cut out a 8x10 of Joss' face and stuck it onto his groin. Apparently he got a number of funny looks from people. He was perfectly willing to do that scene because it's funny.

Get the feeling he likes guns. He talked with great joy about playing around with the guns that he got to use in the various scenes, and that the mini two barrel cannon-type thing that he used in the pilot, I think, in the flashbacks, felt like you were being repeatedly hit in the face and it raised up the dirt from the ground in a 10 foot radius.

Summer Glau was a total professional, rarely ever made a mistake. So whenever someone made a mistake on set, they'd complain, "Summer!"

Not clear whether he's got a pilot, or whether he was auditioning for one, but it's called 'Castle'?.

Now that he's a 'leading man' he can't get secondary parts - before Joss gave him the chance, he had the opposite problem. He said filming Desperate Housewives is very slow. He spends most of his time sitting around waiting to do fifteen minutes. Whereas he was always on the go in Firefly.

He apparently gets mistaken a lot for Jason Bateman, and even sometimes 'Justin Bateman' which is more awkward because he has to explain that it's Justine Bateman. It came in useful once when he was pulled up for speeding and didn't have any id on him.

He mentioned a few actors he admires - Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell (I think? don't know him), George Clooney. Funny thing is my brother and I said Nathan could be the next Harrison Ford. I said that to him when I got his autograph and he said he'd be honoured to have a career like that.

At the end of his talk he put on a white t-shirt that the organisers had bought to be auctioned off. He started drawing and writing on it and added more as the auction went up in price (he conducted the auction). It went for $400, which was the same amount that the other t-shirt went for the following day in Melbourne. All proceeds from the auctions went to various charities.

It was a good day. Photos below.

Ron, at the start of his talk. He's wearing a "Lakers" beanie because he was watching a game during the lunch break.

Ron was very expressive and laughed a lot

Can't for the life of us remember what Nathan was doing, but it wasn't rubbing his nose.

Nathan was also very expressive. Got a number of silly expressions on camera.

The shirt that Nathan put on for the auction, over his shirt. The photos below show the work in progress as the amount of money went up.

Belly button, chest hair and snail trail.

Oh! So, that explains the "Summer!" in the outtakes. I was wondering what the hell that was all about. And they talk a bit in the Firefly commentaries about how much fun they had with the guns.

But it's cool that you got to see Nathan. I've always thought he'd be a complete ham. Thanks for putting up the photos.
