Went to Oztrek09 with my sister (who wrote most of this entry) yesterday, with Levar Burton as the guest (Geordi LaForge off Star Trek: TNG).

He was a fun and fantastic speaker, possibly helped by 3 beers at the lunch with the VIPs (I think our beer has a higher alcohol content then most US beers, which could have been interesting). What was interesting to learn about was, in the early seasons of TNG, the "Johnson manoeuvre", I think it was called. The uniforms would tent up at groin level on Brent Spiner and Levar when they were sitting in the 'conn' chairs at the front of the bridge, as they were so slouched down. They had to use a clip type thing with a small sandbag type thing attached to it to hold the uniform down so that it was out of camera range. Levar very nicely demonstrated it for us, sadly those photos come out too blurry. He said there was a lot of nylon in the 24th century.

Levar said that Brent Spiner was the biggest diva on set, but also the biggest wit. Brent was Levar's best man for his wedding and Michael Dorn, Patrick Stewart and Jonathon Frakes were his groomsmen--a hell of a wedding photo! An audience member suggested them all signing it and selling it on ebay ;)

The visor was a pain, both literally and figuratively. The screws to hold it in place dug into his temples so that after half an hour it was painful. Also he could only see straight ahead, not down or up, which made it hard with navigating. The cast didn't help in any way with making it easier for him to navigate the sets, but eventually he learned where things were--get out of the turbolift, turn right, if he hit Worf he'd gone too far.

His mum was an English teacher and he joked that if he didn't read when he was a kid, he'd get hit by a book. When he read Captain Courageous when he was 9 he went into a depression after finishing it because it was over. He now slows down when he gets to the end of a book to try and savour it and still gets depressed after finishing. Reading Rainbow was his way of trying to capture kids when they're making the choice to be a reader or not. He's a self proclaimed nerd and geek.

Roots was his very first audition and his very first role. He's in the midst of producing and directing a TV show starring himself--his intro back into acting after 12 years of directing. Unsurprisingly the producer gave him the job and all the things we've heard about the casting couch are true (I did mention that he has a good sense of humour, didn't I?).

He could die happy if he got to work with Sidney Poitier (he got applauded for that).

He loved the new Star Trek movie and feels that the Next Gen crew still has a story to tell--but don't take that as him saying that there is going to be another movie, as far as he knows, there isn't.

When we were getting autographs, my sister mentioned to him that we'd liked him on Christy. He was very surprised that we'd seen it. He said that it was just after TNG finished.

And now we just get to look forward to seeing Patrick Stewart in January next year!! Couldn't afford the vip ticket with the cocktail party and photo opportunity, but we will get an autograph.

I survived. Actually did surprisingly well.

A tidbit for the West Wingers.

One of the guests was Tony Amendola. As well as his recurring role on SG1, he has guest starred in a multitude of tv shows. Including West Wing - "Game On" as Qumari U.N. Ambassador Ali Nissir. I asked him out of the guest roles he's done, were there any that particularly stood out or that he really wanted. I got the answer I'd been hoping for.

He said West Wing. Every actor wanted to do it and he would've been so disappointed if he hadn't been able to. And he got to work with John Spencer, the day after John's Emmy win. He praised him and said that John Spencer was the person character actors looked up to. He said he told John things along those lines, and John was telling him to stop it and brushing it off (he did a good imitation of John). Tony said there were two people he'd wanted to work with, John and Hector Elizondo, and he got to work with both. His respect for John was very touching.

When I got my autograph signed, I thanked Tony for sharing that story.

Oh, and his other favourite guest star role was on Angel which he said was a lot of fun.

I guess I should just give the con from a few weeks ago a brief mention. Wasn't a great day with my anxiety etc, so I only saw the second half and even then I was struggling.

From what my siblings said, John Billingsley (and his wife) were fabulous. And I so wanted to ask him if he had any memories from West Wing and whether he had a favourite map. Apparently he was unhappy with his second Cold Case episode, thought the storyline was ridiculous. And he hated the end of Enterprise.

They put Jewel Staite on with Jonathan Woodward (Tracey from the ep "The Message", was also in Buffy and Angel). I was disappointed. He tended to dominate. I wanted to hear about the show, but they didn't do any talk as such, just answered questions, most of which weren't related to the show (probably didn't help being the second day of the con). I didn't come out of it knowing anything new. But we did get to sing happy birthday over the phone to her mother in Canada. Jewel is lovely, but I think she looks better with a bit more weight.

I did get autographs and was able to mention to John Billingsley that he and the dog were mum's favourite things in Enterprise. He smiled and said thank you, and then asked, "In that order?" He said to say hello and thank you to mum. Talked a little with him and his wife. Strangely I got a little nervous going over to Jewel, I've generally felt pretty relaxed talking to the guests. I mentioned that I'd seen her in Da Vinci's Inquest and she laughed and said that she forgets these shows are seen everywhere.

The highlight was managing to get an autographed Spike plate to go with my autographed Giles plate (when I got the Giles plate last year, mum didn't blink at the price, just asked why I didn't get the Spike too). Mum'd been talking about it leading up the con that I might be able to get it, had bought an extra plate stand just in case, and had insisted the night before that I was to get it if they had it.

My brother spent quite a bit of money on a lovely sexy photo of the 4 girls from Firefly (and Jewel signing it was part of the price) in the auction, and didn't really want to tell mum what he paid, thinking mum would be unhappy (he has a mortgage and owes my parents and sister a bit of money), but she didn't mind at all. I love my mum :) I bought autographed photos of Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop from Gilmore Girls, the dealer came out from the US. Also bought an autographed photo of Summer Glau (scene from Serenity).

Probably the worst con I've been to :(, but it may've been the only chance to see any of the Firefly mob.

On a totally different note, you know it's a bad day when the printer at work makes you cry. Was feeling really strange on Friday. I can only describe it as feeling like I was having an allergic reaction. My skin was crawling, my eyes and nose itchy, my head was hurting, then my finger joints started hurting. Other joints joined in when I got home. Need to ask my rheumatologist about it on Tuesday. I don't know whether the symptoms are related. Add in some pms, and the 4 times the printer wouldn't spit out the manifest was just too much.

My sister has put up a con report here.

For [livejournal.com profile] cretkid, here's the bit on Julie Caitlin Brown's JAG experience:

She talked about a drill sargeant she played on JAG, and how her underlings (both real marines and extras) weren't acting as a cohesive unit. So she told them that they couldn't stop acting until she yelled fallout or at ease. ET (or one of those things) was filming on the set and asked her to yell some sentence into the camera (I can't remember what it was). They said it was great that a real drill sargeant had been hired. I think she was kinda flattered.

Someone asked Torri if she was recognised much. She said no, but she's had a few people come up to her in bars, including one guy who came up to her and whispered, "My friends don't know I watch the show..."

And my sister's telling of the toilet story...

And my own personal experience with Torri...I think.

My sister and I went to the loos after waiting 2 and a half hours for autographs (it's all Rainbow's fault...his line went the longest). I was washing my hands when I heard a Canadian voice say, "Is anyone there?" I replied yes, and she said that there was no toilet paper and could I pass her some.

I had a moment of, but my hands are still wet, and how much do I get...before I passed her some toilet paper. Her line was just about finished when we'd left the autographs finally, so I'm fairly certain it was Torri.

So, I've had my adventure with a convention guest, just as my sister had one at the last convention (almost colliding with Connor Trinneer).

I'd gladly go and see Torri again.

I won't say too much, some things are a little hard to narrate (and remember), and I don't think there's a great deal of interest anyway.

Alexis Cruz - little (though apparently he's about my height) and cute. Been acting since he was 9 (he's my age), went to the Fame school. I don't really know his character in Stargate, not having seen the movie, and the series in only a very disjointed manner. He talked a lot about acting as a craft and I found that very interesting. He mentioned that Peter DeLuise is so into the show, and that if he wasn't involved in it, he'd be at the cons.

Rainbow Sun Francks - very cute. And funny and hyperactive. His hate of Vegemite became a running joke, he's going to use it as insulation for his house. He said it's yeast and it's alive and you're eating it...someone in the audience yelled out "But they're happy little Vegemites!" And we proceeded to sing him the song. He kept seeing native animals bonking, first kangaroos and then fairy penguins.

He used to go on the set of La Femme Nikita to visit his dad, he's got quite a few photos of himself surrounded by guns. He said Peta Wilson was often over at his house, talking cars with his father. He auditioned for SGA just before they were about to start shooting, and was finally offered the role the day before. So he said he was very out of it during Rising. He loves sci-fi.

At the end of the day, all the actors came out to draw the raffle, which was for a large framed collection of 4 autographed Stargate photos (RDA, Amanda, Chris and Michael I think). Rainbow grabbed it and ran out the door. He then came in the door at the back and went to the dealers table and asked "how much?" :)

Julie Caitlin Brown - she auditioned for Delenn and Susan, talked about how she got the role last minute on Babylon 5 after the previous actress had a panic attack and ripped the mask off. She said she's known as latex lady (played many aliens), someone in the audience snorted, and she replied not that kind. Talked about a funny moment when she was mistaken for a real drill sargeant by a tv crew on the set of JAG. Sang a few songs.

Torri Higginson - totally different from Weir, I very much like her (and I like Weir too). She said that after she'd had the makeup done for Old Weir in Before I Sleep, she looked in the mirror and recognised her grandmother. She showed us photos of her dog dressed up as a Wraith. Someone asked how her Johnny Depp obsession is going. She replied that fans keep sending her pictures of him, and her mother is worried about her ;)

She was asked if she could play any role, what would it be. She said that if a story was ever made about the singer Patti Smith (I think...I could be misremembering), she'd love to play her. And anything that Katharine Hepburn did, and every Shakespearean play.

They've finished filming season 2, and she said that Elizabeth will become more dark by the end of season. And general plot point spoiler ) Someone asked how many batteries Weir had left, she said one and she should watch what she says at cons. And she wants Elizabeth to go to a planet with gorgeous young men with 8 arms.

Someone asked about the relationship between Weir and Rodney. She said she thinks they're like brother and sister, they love each other, and she puts up with him. And she said David always has the flu (and he's a little like Rodney) ;)

So tired. But survived the con. Will take me a little while to get things down, but a few snapshots.

Alexis Cruz is a Dungeons and Dragons geek. And he wore a skirt today (he claimed it was a utility kilt and "didn't you realise I wore a skirt on the show?").

Rainbow Sun Francks has been traumatised by Vegemite and loves Firefly. And I found out that he's the son of Don Francks, alias Walter from La Femme Nikita.

I mentioned to Julie Caitlin Brown that I saw her at a con 8 years ago. She replied that I must've been young then and asked how old I was now. I said 31 and got that look I've become very familiar with over the last year.

Torri is gorgeous, and in mannerisms and looks reminded me of Jordan from Crossing Jordan. And she writes little essays when personalising autographs. And we're pretty sure it was Torri my sister saved in the loos just before we left (most were out of paper and she called out asking if anyone was there).

A few photos...I'm not impressed with the digital camera. Between the light meter and them moving, most were blurry. My little old 35mm automatic camera does a better job. But at least got a decent one of all.

photos )

My sister and I have already paid for next October's Stargate con, even without knowing the guest list.

And I was a really bad girl and bought a Giles autographed plate...broke my bank account, but it's so gorgeous. And mum didn't kill me ;)
